What does OFA stand for?
OFA stands for Orthopedic Foundation for Animals.
All our dogs are or will be tested for hip and elbow dysplasia and receive an ACVO Eye Examination to ensure they are free of any eye disease. Once our dogs are over 2 years of age they can be tested for known issues within the American Cocker Spaniel breed. This is essential to ensure that we are breeding healthy dogs which results in healthy pups. In addition we screen for genetic diseases such as Progressive Rod-Cone Degeneration form of Progressive Retinal Atrophy (prcd-PRA). PRA can lead to blindness so we ensure that we do not breed known carriers to another known carrier as this would be considered unethical under our kennels standards.
Anyone interested in our breeding program can search the OFA data base or request our CHIC health certificates. Studs not in our kennel are held to the same standards for our breeding pairings. All of our dogs undergo DNA screening for known genetic diseases such as PRA.
All puppies are dewormed, receive their first set of vaccinations and veterinary examination to ensure they are in the best health before they head to their forever homes. Potential puppy homes are welcome to reach out with any questions they have. Puppies come with a one year health guarantee.
"Veterinarians and responsible breeders of purebred dogs and cats are well aware that hip dysplasia and other inherited diseases can be controlled by careful, selective breeding programs. DNA tests for specific diseases remain the “gold standard” in determining an animal’s genotype, but in the absence of available DNA tests, phenotypic evaluations are the best alternative. Information regarding the test results from the sire and dam, along with information on other close relatives such as siblings, half-siblings, aunts and uncles allows breeders to apply greater selective pressure to produce normal offspring and avoid affected offspring."
